Spain's Deposit Guarantee Scheme: what the 100,000 euro limit protects

Spain's Deposit Guarantee Scheme: what the 100,000 euro limit protects
When choosing a savings account or time deposit, return and access matter. So does knowing what happens if a bank cannot return customer deposits. Spain's Deposit Guarantee Fund (FGD) protects deposits at participating credit institutions under specific rules.
The familiar figure is 100,000 euros per depositor and institution. It is not 100,000 euros for every account and it does not cover every product sold by a bank.
For product comparisons, start with the savings pillar, remunerated accounts versus time deposits and the emergency fund guide.
The general rule
FGD states that it generally guarantees up to 100,000 euros per depositor and institution when a participating entity is determined unable to return deposits. Deposits held by the same person at the same institution are aggregated: two accounts at one bank do not create two separate limits.
For a joint account, the limit is assessed per holder. As a simple illustration, 160,000 euros held equally by two people would normally mean 80,000 euros attributed to each holder. The contract and ownership details still matter, especially for larger or unusual balances.
Temporary higher protection
In certain cases, FGD may protect the full amount deposited in the previous three months. Examples include funds from the sale of a private residential property and certain one-off payments linked to marriage, divorce, retirement, dismissal, disability, death, insurance or compensation. Keep the documents proving the origin of funds and check the official conditions for your case.
What it does not protect
The scheme covers deposits, not the market value of every financial product. Shares, investment funds, ETFs, pension plans and cryptoassets have different legal structures and risks; buying them through a bank does not turn them into protected deposits.
Use this as a concentration-risk check, not as the only reason to open accounts. List your deposits by institution and holder, then decide which money needs liquidity and which has a long investment horizon. Our personal savings guide and how to invest in Spain can help with that split.
Conclusion
Spain's Deposit Guarantee Fund generally protects up to 100,000 euros per depositor and institution. Knowing what counts as a deposit, who holds it and where it is concentrated helps you separate safety, liquidity and return when organising your savings.
